I believe very strongly in the importance of spirituality with respect to a person being able to develop balance and embrace the change and growth which they desire. Clients who have a connection to a power greater than themselves are able to harness this perspective for the wisdom, guidance, and courage to begin experiencing the process of positive changes they want to make, allowing them to fearlessly become who they want to be and live the life they have always wanted.
For my clients that have a desire to have a Biblical counseling perspective incorporated into their counseling, I offer Christian counseling, which combines evidence-based, secular techniques and modalities with biblical principles. While I was educated and trained to use counseling techniques which do not emphasize a spiritual perspective, I have found that much of the wisdom found in these techniques has a basis in scripture. In fact, they are enhanced by the spiritual power behind scripture. Scripture truly does not “return void.”
Truth is truth. It turns out that the most efficacious psychotherapy and counseling techniques “discovered” in the last 50 years have a basis in biblical wisdom that has been around for 6000 years! The evidence-based therapy techniques which I use always have corresponding parallels to biblical wisdom. For clients that want to utilize this perspective for guidance and power for change in their lives, I am able to lay out the biblical principles which support my “non-Christian” or secular counseling training and techniques. Whether you are interested in individual counseling. couples counseling, or marriage counseling, I can help guide you with from the template God has for life with Christian counseling. In addition to marriage/couples counseling, I also provide premarital counseling. This is a worthwhile strategy for couples that want to build a solid spiritual foundation for their coming marriage.
I respect every person’s right to follow whatever spiritual path they choose. I am able to accommodate all spiritual paths in my counseling techniques. While I feel that any type of spirituality is beneficial to success in the counseling process, the particular spirituality that I follow and am the most familiar with is Christianity. I know that Christianity is simply not for everyone. I am able to respect a client’s wishes with respect to self-determination of their own particular type of faith. I have a strict personal value (which itself is based upon biblical principles!) of never injecting my faith into a counseling session with clients who have made a choice that Christianity is not for them.
